What Are Print Refills and When Do You Need Them?

Print Refills from Smallwoods are replacement prints designed to fit inside existing Smallwoods frames. Instead of buying a whole new frame, you order just the print — the same premium substrate, perfectly sized for your frame, at a lower price. There are two types: Textured (for frames without acrylic) and Non-Textured (for frames with acrylic). Production is 1–3 business days, same as all Smallwoods custom products.

What Are Print Refills?

A Print Refill is a high-resolution custom print on a rigid board — the same material used in Smallwoods's standard Frames product. It's cut to the exact dimensions of Smallwoods's frame openings, so it fits perfectly without trimming or adjusting.

From the Smallwoods product description:

"Already have a Smallwoods Frame? Give it a fresh new look with our Print Refills! These high-resolution prints are crafted on 1/4" board and perfectly sized to fit your frame—no acrylic insert required. Note: Each Print Refill includes a small white border around the edges with order details to ensure top-notch quality and accurate fulfillment."

Two Types of Print Refills

1. Textured Print Refill

The Textured Print Refill uses the same canvas-textured board as the standard Frames product:

  • Surface: Canvas-textured board — the familiar glare-free, museum-quality texture
  • Best for: Frames that do NOT have an acrylic front panel (standard Smallwoods Frames)
  • Thickness: 3/16" board (also referred to as 1/4" board in product descriptions)
  • Includes: A small white border with order details around the edges
  • Designer URL: Order Textured Print Refill

2. Non-Textured Print Refill

The Non-Textured Print Refill is designed for frames that DO have an acrylic panel:

  • Surface: Smooth (non-textured) material — designed to look best behind the glossy acrylic front
  • Best for: Smallwoods Acrylic Frames — the smooth surface pairs correctly with the acrylic overlay
  • No acrylic included: The refill doesn't come with an acrylic panel — your existing frame's acrylic re-covers it
  • Designer URL: Order Non-Textured Print Refill

What's the Same in Both Types

  • High-resolution custom printing of your photo
  • Perfectly sized to fit Smallwoods frames — no trimming needed
  • Small white border with order details printed around edges (for quality and fulfillment tracking)
  • 1–3 business day production
  • Available in all standard Smallwoods frame sizes (8×10 through 44×22)

Important Compatibility Notes

  • Smallwoods frames only: Print Refills are cut to fit Smallwoods's specific frame dimensions. They will not fit frames from other brands.
  • Frames from the last 5 years: Refills are compatible with Smallwoods frames ordered over approximately the last 5 years (dimensions have remained consistent).
  • No acrylic included: Whether you order Textured or Non-Textured, no new acrylic panel is included. For Acrylic Frames, your existing acrylic re-covers the new print.

When Should You Order a Print Refill?

1. Update Family Photos

Family photos age fast — babies become toddlers, kids grow up, families expand. If you have a great Smallwoods frame but your current print is 2–3 years old, a Print Refill lets you update the photo without replacing the frame.

2. Seasonal Refresh

Some customers keep the same frame on the wall year-round but swap the print seasonally — a summer beach photo for warm months, a cozy holiday shot in winter. The Refill system makes this economical.

3. Gift Upgrade

If you received a Smallwoods frame as a gift or bought one earlier, you can order a fresh Print Refill with a new photo. This also makes a great gift on its own — send someone a new print that fits their existing Smallwoods frame.

4. Better Photo Quality Available

Older prints may have been made from lower-resolution photos. If you now have a professional portrait or a higher-quality version of a favorite moment, a Refill upgrades the print without touching the frame.

5. Change the Photo Without Changing the Frame

If you love the frame style but want a different image — different family member, different milestone, different aesthetic — the Refill is the most efficient way to do it.

How to Order a Print Refill

Print Refills are ordered through the Smallwoods designer app using a direct SKU-based URL:

You'll upload your photo, select the size that matches your existing frame, and order. No frame color selection is needed (you're just ordering the print).

Print Refill Pricing

Print Refills are priced lower than the full framed product — you're paying for the print only, not the frame hardware. Current sale pricing for Non-Textured Print Refills (25×17 default): Full price $90, Sale price $59, Bundle price $39.
